Tirolean Alpine XC 2

Availability : Fully Booked

£650.00

These tours are focused on pilots who don't get to fly the Alps often and rather than base themselves in 1 flying site for a week, experience multiple "Classic" flying sites in 3 different countries.

We have chosen the Tirol area of Austria to base ourselves, whilst we fly and explore the Tirolean Alps, Dolomites as well as the Bavarian Alps. The concept of this tour is to introduce intermediate and advanced pilots to high alpine XC flying.

Details

Our Home base for these tours will be the Stubai Valley (30km from Innsbruck), Austria. From here we have access to Italy and the Dolomites to the Sth, the entire Austrian Tirolean alpine range and Germany's Bavarian Alps to the Nth. This region offers some of the best XC flying in the Alps, and due to its location we can escape bad weather by driving to the other side of the main alpine chain. The 6 "Classic" sites we intend to fly are: Stubai Valley, Garmisch, Tegelberg, Kossen, Zillertal Valley, Speikboden/Grente, & many other sites. The month of June typically has good weather, with moderate to strong thermals and high cloud-base. It is also just before the European school holidays, so will avoid the crowds (on the mountains and the highways) and the increased "high season" charges.

Flying

Our aim is to fly every day, weather permitting. There are 5 classic sites within 90mins drive of Stubai (Kossen is 2hrs drive) and we will determine which site to fly each day, depending on the forecast. In a perfect world, we would fly Stubai one day then travel to a different site the following day. The forecast will determine the day's flying tasks, with triangles and out and returns being our preferred XC options. From 3 of the sites it is possible to fly into another country and we will take advantage of this if/when the weather is suitable. There is something so rewarding about landing in a different country and drinking a "foreign" beer whilst waiting for retrieve.....

Accommodation

Our Alpine Lodge is located in Neustift, Stubai Valley. This fantastic lodge will provide us with twin share, en-suite rooms (with Balcony and mountain views), Breakfast - continental and cooked English, packed lunch and a evening BBQ during our stay. The lodge is opposite the official launch site of Elfer and we can fly down to the cable car from the lodge. It also boasts its own LZ in a paddock next to the lodge and a private high alpine launch we can use when conditions are suitable.

XC Guiding

There will be a minimum of 2 guides on this course, with 3 guides most days. Each morning we will discuss the day's weather and which site is best to fly, followed by an in-depth site briefing using photos and Google Earth to illustrate potential dangers and landing fields. 2 Tasks will be set for the day and discussed in length before leaving for the flying site. Once at the site, we will reassess the conditions and choose which one of our tasks we will attempt to fly. When conditions are suitable we will all launch together and climb out on the house thermal. From there Guide 1 will move forward down the chosen route with the leading pilots looking for the 2nd climb. Guide 2 will follow once all pilots are established and moving down the course line.
