Annecy SIV / Pilotage

Fly over the pristine waters of Lake Annecy, SIV flights in the morning followed by a relaxing XC flight in the afternoon. Ideal for pilots who want to explore the region and who want to perfect their Pilotage/SIV/Acro moves.

Courses run every June

Due to the current travel bans around the world, we have been forced to cancel our tours up until July 2020. You are welcome to reserve a spot on any of our trips from August onwards, using our online booking system without any obligation to pay now. We can 'pencil you in' and request payment a month before the start of the trip, once the international travel situation resolves safely.

Course Structure & Details

Launching from Forclaz, the SIV flights are conducted above Lake Annecy, allegedly the cleanest lake in Europe, with landing at the designated SIV landing on the lake shore at our campsite.

This SIV course is a more intimate and intense, as the standard program has 2 flights in the morning, followed by a filmed debrief and siesta. And then a late-afternoon relaxing cross country flight, so sometimes 3 flights per day on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, providing pilots are rested and happy.

The group often stays at the same campsite, sharing chalets, which can be booked direct or through Escape.

You are taught all aspects of controlling your wing during the SIV, from deflations and wingovers to stall recovery and SATS, (if you wish). Then, when you fly XC, you have the added confidence and skill in glider control, which allows you to focus on positive things like finding lift and coring, which frees your mind and helps you fly further.

1:1 Instruction

I want you to fly with as little stress as possible, in an exciting and progressive way.

Although we brief and de-brief as a group, all your SIV flights are 1 to 1, just you and me, so you can perform any manoeuvre and routine, providing you have been briefed to do it prior to taking off.

We can add or remove, any moves that would help you increase your confidence and glider control skills. So if you have done an SIV course before, and want to just get to know your new glider, then we can design a program to suit that.

Safety & Briefings

You will be given detailed briefings prior to each flight and in-flight instruction over the radio by Jocky beneath you in the safety boat, followed by an individual de-brief.

You will be provided with a inflatable collar and a water proof radio bag.

We will be using 2-metre band radios so if you need to hire one for £30 please let Escape know before the course.

During the XC section of the tour you will be given instruction from the ground and air-to-air, plus a task brief and de-brief, using the big scene and 3D map.

If you feel tired or out of you comfort level then you must land at either main landings and we will collect you.

Filming

We film all your flights using a full HD camera and a highly trained cameraman.

These flights are used for debriefing you and handed over to you at the end of the course for your reference and study, free of charge. You just need to bring your SD card or USB stick.

Travel

It is ideal to fly into Geneva airport. There is a good regular bus service from Geneva airport to Annecy.

If you are arriving late, and may wish to taxi share, then feel free to email this group with your arrival times and maybe you can hook up with each other and save money. If you do get a taxi, make sure it is a French one, preferably from the Doussard area, these can be found and booked on the internet, as the ones outside the airport can be expensive.

A good taxi option that our pilots have used recently, and are happy with, can be found here : https://www.jamtransfer.com/

Accomodation

We have reserved a few two-bedroom chalets for our group of pilots on a triple sharing basis at the Nubliere campsite. Do let us know if you want to reserve a place in these chalets.

You can also choose to book your own chalets, stay elsewhere in a B&B or bring along your tents and camp.

Insurance

It is essential that you have travel insurance which covers you in respect of the following :
1. Medical Treatment
2. Medical Repatriation
3. Search & Rescue by helicopter

We will hand out a central grab sheet form, where we would like all pilots to fill in their emergency contact details, insurance policy and contact numbers.

This grab sheet also mirrors all the Risk Acceptance sign offs that are a part of this document. Please give it a good read and make sure you understand and accept the risk involved.

Equipment

We assume that you will arrive with a functional paraglider, harness and reserve parachute. If required, we are happy to check it for you.

You can also arrange for a reserve repack done by our team. This is separate from the course and costs £40.

You will need a 2m radio (144-146mhz). Headsets are not needed as you can hear through the waterbag, but cheap radios are best avoided as they often do not have the range or volume. You can hire good quality Yaesu radios can be hired from us at £30/week, with advance notice.
